You Can't Miss: blog

This week on "Noisy Decent Graphics" there was a post from a student who asked graphic designers what inspired them. I thought some of the responses to be hilarious so I thought I would just post the posting. So, here goes:

---"I'm from the arts institute at bournemouth and am researching inspriation for my final major project. I was hoping you could ask your graphic designers 1 thing that inspires them.

A looming deadline.

I'm no designer, but what the hey: Beethoven's 6th Symphony in F, sunsets, the Malvern Hills, the Victoria & Albert Museum, George Orwell, John Milton and anything with well played guitar (especially Richard Thompson playing Vincent Black Lightning on youtube).

Cheese. We all know that strange dreams follow a late night cheesy snack. Just have a pen and paper by the bed and note the randomness that follows. There's sure to be a gem in there sooner or later. Best to leave the crackers out...

You know those numbered queue tickets you get at the deli counter sometimes? Well one of those did it for me last week.

Personally, I thought that the cheese one was hilarious! Davidthedesigner, however won me over with the response "A looming deadline." I think all of us in Advanced Mag. Design can relate to this posting!!! haha

Response

I ended up (after many changes) deciding to write my historical perspective on "McCall's" magazine. For me, I wouldn't have originally picked this type of magazine, however, I definitely learned a lot by looking at it. The worst part for me were my time restraints this past week! Because of my stupid car situation and work this past week, it was hard for me to find time and a ride to and from the library. I ended up only covering 1960-1965, but I felt like I had enough to write about and definitely enough visuals.

It was almost a challenge writing that paper though because I had so much to write about yet couldn't find the right words once I began! Funny how magazine design has come such a long way...even from the 1960s.

Critique

This week I am giving a critique of my first design for my "Vox" department: Screen. I had a bit of a miscommunication with my editors, however I don't think my spread looks to bad. It was a lot of work trying to get the right images though, but now I know how long it's going to take for next time.

I really liked coming in and working on the design over the weekend. It's nice because although I may have other stuff going on, once I get into that room everything else just vanishes and it's me and the design. It's hard at home sometimes because my dog always wants to play!

I would like to have the courage to play more with the department pages. I think I'm focused too much on must making everything fit and work together to where I tend to lose my creativity when I am in Department-page mindset. That will be my goal for my next one! I have attached the image of my spread, sort of mid-design (so it's definitely not the final). Let me know what you think.

Update

Hi class!

I wanted to first apologize for today in class. I still don't know why I have been feeling this way, but I'm pretty sure this afternoon was a total nervous breakdown to accompany my lightheadedness and major headache. I am going to try and get to a doctor tomorrow morning, so we'll see.

I think I'm going to make this posting this week sweet and short just because I really need to just lie down. See you Thursday!
