You Can't Miss: blog

This week Noisy Decent Graphics has totally bewildered me! Design has gotten out of hand when it comes to service. The photos above show the urinals in the Schipol airport in Europe.

They have painted flies on them to help reduce spillage of urine! Supposedly, men who have something to aim at while urinating don't wander off the urinal and pee onto the floor. This isn't something I know too much about, but I do know that the flies are really good...I just am fortunate to not have had to paint them onto all those toilets! haha

Can you think of anything outrageous like this in Columbia? This town is considered pretty creative, so I'd like to see someone find something just as weird that would amuse me! Hey, maybe we could do a photo-driven story on something like that!

Response

Today I am responding to the Trends assignment. It was hard to get the interview, but once I decided to just pick a name off of the "Hallmark" masthead and try and call them through the directory it actually helped! I received a call two hours later from the creative director, Michelle Egan, and we set up an interview.

The interview went pretty well. I discovered that Michelle was an MU graduate. She was very nice and sounded pretty young for a creative director. After hearing her story, it really made me realize how random your life can get after school. Her major was advertising and she's just now using it by dealing with the ad department, but that's it. Other than that, she's been a graphic designer and teacher.

I was really surprised to learn about the magazine and how they handle their photography, the design and the illustrations.
Also, since there isn't much about their magazine critique-wise, it was great to hear about the beginnings of "Hallmark" from someone who was there from the initial conception.

I don't want to give away too much, but it was a great experience and she was a very nice and obviously driven person to speak with...very encouraging!

Critique

This week I am critiquing my Screen spread for this Thursday's edition. Attached is a VERY early version of my illustration.

Because it was such a last-minute change for me, I was pretty unhappy with it at first. The Screen editors had to write the secondary on Friday because the writer didn't write an article, he wrote a list! But before that I heard the lovely news that the photo shoot for the bookstore competition anchor story had been cancelled since the student was ill. We were going to try and find another student to film, however I knew I would have to do an illustration and I was already planning to do one for the secondary.

Last-minute changes seem to be my life story, however this one just really annoyed me this past weekend. But I got over it and I have to say that the spread didn't turn out as horrible as I had thought it would. My illustration isn't my favorite but I think it works well for the story and everything. And my Halle Berry pub still for the secondary is pretty cute, and it chose my accent color with the pretty red carpet in the background!

Take a look at it on Thursday!
